Collaboration projects

Active citizenship lies at the core of Arkki’s educational philosophy.

Arkki’s mission is to equip children and youth with the tools and opportunities to effect positive change within their communities and society at large through active engagement and participation.

Arkki has spearheaded initiatives fostering active participation, involving children in real-world participatory and social innovation projects in collaboration with various institutions and local authorities, including the Helsinki Urban Planning department, the Thai Parliament, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Planning and Architecture, as well as international organizations like Save the Children and UNICEF.

Arkki Thailand and Love Wildlife Foundation regularly collaborate to design creative camps that educate children about the importance of wildlife and their connection to the world we all live in. The Foundation is a non-profit registered in the country of Thailand dedicated to the protection of Southeast Asian wildlife through research, education and outreach. This is especially important to discourage the illegal trade of protected animal species in Thailand such as the Slow Loris.

One of the most popular camps by Arkki Thailand and Love Wildlife Foundation involves educating students, through filmmaking, about what sort of pets are allowed at home and what are illegal and should not be bought, even though they may look cute and adorable. Arkki and the Foundation’s educators work together to teach students various important skills such as empathy, to understand how animals might feel at the destruction of their habitat, and problem solving, to come up with ideas to combat the trade in illegal wildlife.

During the filmmaking camps, children roleplayed as film directors and participated in the process of designing their stop motion video to highlight education and support for the conservation of threatened or endangered species in Thailand and for the protection and wellbeing of wildlife. The children were guided to conduct online research, create characters, write scripts, present storyboards and given practical training in photo capture and video taking techniques. They also built their own film studio sets and applied all they were taught to shoot, edit and present their very own original stop motion film.

By immersing children in topics that they can easily relate to, and challenging them to find solutions to real and meaningful problems that they care about, Arkki creates memorable learning journeys and memories to truly bring 21st century creative education to our students.

Arkki Thailand ran a series of camps recently for children 4-12 years, during the July and August 2023 period, coinciding with the international school holidays. The camps were well received by parents seeking to building their children’s creativity and design skills in an environment of fun and discovery.

One of the popular camps was our Fashion Accessories design camp, which we did in collaboration with Marimekko, a Finnish design house celebrated worldwide for its original prints and colors.

During this camp, children roleplayed as fashion designers and participated in the process of designing their own original fabric prints and fashion accessories step by step. They were guided to translate their inspirations about fashion into colors, patterns, and prints through the design process such as creating their own mood board to express their ideas.

The children were also guided on dying techniques to create their own unique fabric prints, and later taught fashion accessories design and sewing techniques, using their own fabric prints to create a range of in-trend items for daily use such as bags, pencil cases, and scrunchies to keep their hair neat and tidy.

However, the highlight of the Fashion Accessories design camp was no doubt the visit to Finnish design powerhouse, Marimekko. Marimekko has been very well received in Thailand since it launched a few years ago and now has 13 stores in Bangkok. It has also a popular collaboration with Japanese fashion brand Uniqlo. Walking along the streets of Bangkok, it is often easy to see children and ladies of all ages wearing the distinctive prints that characterize Marimekko designs.

During the visit to the flagship Marimekko store in Bangkok, mums were just as excited as the children! Everyone listened attentively as the Marimekko designers explained the essence of what the Marimekko brand stood for and the thinking and design philosophy behind various iconic designs. The children also learned that fashion was not only confined to clothing, bags, and fashion accessories as they were also shown Marimekko’s range of products for homes and were even treated to some delicious desserts in the Marimekko café. After the visit, mums could be seen buying various Marimekko products to add to their fashion collections.

It was truly a wonderful and holistic learning journey for the students and we look forward to further industry collaborations in future to truly bring 21st century creative education to our students.

More than 400 young innovators from over 18 countries took part in the open competition Sustain-A-City facilitated by Arkki Singapore and commissioned by the Temasek Foundation in April and May 2023.  The urban innovation challenge was open to all students between 18-25 years old around the world. The winners were unveiled on 8 June as part of the #Ecosperity Week 2023!

The competition was organised by Temasek Ecosperity’s platform, in partnership with Arkki Singapore. Participants attended 3 virtual design workshops and 1-on-1 coaching sessions in spring 2023.

Arkki Singapore was in charge of the competition arrangements and facilitating the students´ innovation process and coaching the teams to develop their sustainable city ideas throughout the competition through various workshops on design thinking, prototyping, and storytelling.

Check out the amazing winning innovations to tackle the challenges in the urban environment. The range of ideas was vast, from smart urban water and waste management solutions to an efficient cooling system for solar panels.

Arkki Thailand has collaborated with the Love Wildlife Foundation to raise awareness of wildlife conservation through different creative design projects and camps.

In the courses children get to know and see the importance of wildlife conservation and come up with creative ideas and products or practice storytelling and create animations to share knowledge and invite others to help conserve wildlife!

The pupils have learned for example about the Slow Loris, a species whose populations have decreased significantly and may be at the end of extinction stage. This is a real issue where the pupils get to use and share  their Design Thinking skills to come up with creative perspectives and solutions for wildlife conservation.
